During Starfield’s Back to Vectera you will have the chance to recruit Lin and Heller, the first characters you met in the game, to your crew.

Lin & Heller

In Bethesda’s latest space RPG, Starfield, players get to undertake thrilling space quests and dip their toes in the nuanced territory of crew recruitment and outpost management. Two characters stand out among the available options for adding to your team: Lin and Heller. They are not just your potential crewmates but also sentimental markers of your journey, as they are the first NPCs you encounter in the game at the start of “One Small Step.”

Here’s everything you need to know about recruiting Lin and Heller, their skills, and the unique benefits they can bring to your outposts.

Who Are Lin and Heller?

The game starts with you, Lin, and Heller as colleagues in an Argos Extractors mining facility in Vectera, a moon of planet Anselon in the Narion system. Lin is your supervisor, Heller is a subordinate, and you are a promising rookie.

One Small Step will take you away from Vectera, but you will meet Lin and Heller again relatively soon.

When Can You Recruit Them?

You can recruit both Lin and Heller during the “Back to Vectera” main quest.

The mission becomes available after you complete Starfield’s second main mission, “The Old Neighborhood,” alongside “The Empty Nest” and “Into the Unknown.” Sarah recommends starting with “Back To Vectera,” so for simplicity, let’s say that Lin and Heller become recruitable during Starfield’s third main mission.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Here’s how to recruit Lin in Back to Vectera:

  1. Head to Argos Extractors Mining Outpost on Vectera: Fast travel to Vectera and land at the Argos Extractors Mining Outpost.
  2. Talk to Lin: You will find Lin waiting for you outside, just beyond the launchpad.
  3. Fix the Comms Computer and Listen to the Emergency Transmission: Finish the mandatory quest steps involving fixing the computer terminal at the facility’s control room and finding Barrett’s message.
  4. Return to Lin: Return to Supervisor Lin and discuss your findings regarding Barrett’s location.
  5. Recruit Lin: You can now talk to Lin again and recruit her to your crew.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Move to Next Destination: After recruiting Lin, proceed to the crash site where the Crimson Fleet vessel carrying Barrett and Heller fell. Note that this location is random and varies per playthrough.
  2. Find Heller: Heller will be injured and a bit dazed and confused due to painkillers on the ground near the ship’s crash site.
  3. Get Emergency Transmission 02 from Heller: Talk to Heller to get Emergency Transmission 02, revealing where Barrett is held captive (Bessel III in the Bessel system).
  4. Recruit Heller: Talk to Heller again, and choose the option to recruit him.

Heller Skills

  • Heller is proficient in Outpost Engineering (Rank 3) and Geology (Rank 1).

Considering their skills, it’s best to assign Lin and Heller to manage your outposts rather than having them on your starship or as followers during missions.

Doing so will maximize their contributions to resource extraction and outpost development.

Bonus Tips

  • Neither Lin nor Heller are romanceable characters.
  • Heller and Lin are instrumental if you engage in quests focusing on outpost management and resource gathering.

Recruiting Lin and Heller adds an emotional layer to your Starfield journey, as they are the first characters you meet and can later become a part of your space-faring saga. More importantly, their specialized skills make them invaluable for your outposts, enriching the overall gameplay experience. So, make sure to use this guide to recruit them effectively and make the most out of your journey in Starfield.
