Find out what happens to your old ship when you get a new one in Starfield. How to recover the previous ship?

What Happens to Your Old Ship When You Get a New One in Starfield

Starfield has an abundance of ships to buy from Ship Services Technicians, Staryards, or Showrooms. Of course, you also have the option to steal ships, and doing so against Spacers and Ecliptics won’t even make you lose your sleep.

What Happens to Your Old Ship When You Acquire a New One?

If you are wondering what happens to your old ship when you acquire a new one, the answer is simple. Your previous ship becomes a part of your fleet, a virtual “garage” of sorts. While there is a limit to the maximum number of ships you can own, as long as there is space, you can acquire a new ship.

When you gain a new ship, the game automatically changes your active Home Ship to the new one when you land or Grav Jump. However, your old ship isn’t lost in the void of space. You can even see an animation of it returning to a spaceport.

How to Regain Your Old Ship?

There are two ways to get back to your ship:

  • Visit a Ship Services Technician: You will find a Ship Services Technician at every major spaceport and launching pad. Visit one of them, select the I’d like to view and modify my ships dialogue option, and switch between your ships until you find the one you are looking for, and press “Make Home Ship,” to change your Home Ship to the old one.Make Home Ship Option
  • Outpost Landing Pads with Ship Builders: If you’ve constructed an outpost with a Landing Pad and Ship Builder, you can switch your Home Ship there, too, without visiting a Ship Services Technician. Fast-travel to your outpost, access the Ship Builder menu on the Landing Pad, and you can change your Home Ship at will. Building a Landing Pad with Shipbuilder requires 18x Adaptive Frame, 2x Zero Wire, 2x Berryllium, and 30x Iron. Access the Outpost Shipbuilder from the console near the Landing Pads and select “View and modify ships.” You can also buy ships from there using the “Buy ships” menu, but I’m not sure whether the stock changes.Outpost Ship Builder Console Menu - Starfield

Final Thoughts

Starfield offers a flexible system for managing your spacefaring assets, whether you’re a collector amassing a fleet of special ships or simply the kind of player who switches ships as often as outfits. While the game doesn’t make what happens to your old ships abundantly clear, rest assured they’re safe and soundwaiting for the day you decide to take them out for another spin across the cosmos.
