Supra et Ultra Walkthrough: UC Vanguard Mission 01

Supra et Ultra is the UC Vanguard’s first mission. It will get players to enlist for the Vanguard and pass its exams.

Supra et Ultra Walkthrough

Supra et Ultra is a faction mission in Starfield and the first in the UC Vanguard questline. It’s a mission you can begin as soon as you reach New Atlantis, and it will help you complete the initial step to join the UC Vanguard.

Note: The amount of Credits you receive seems to be affected by both your character level and the game diffculty you are playing on for most missions.

  • UC Vanguard Mission 01
  • Planet(s): Jemison
  • Rewards: 250 EXP & Credits (the number of Credits varies depending on how well you do in the exams and your character level; I got 24,800 Credits on Normal Difficulty and 54,000 Credits on Very Hard Difficulty. To get the maximum Credits for your level, you must complete every task (explore and listen to everything at the Orientation Hall), use the Debug Tools, and hack the Simulation Controls computer (it’s possible that hacking negatively affects your score; I will have to confirm), and complete all 6 Tiers in the simulator).

Head to the MAST District and find the main MAST building to undertake the mission. Turn to the left once you find Commander John Tuala in the lobby. You will first talk to John Tuala during the second main mission “The Old Neighborhood.”

Tuala will attempt to recruit you to the UC Vanguard during that conversation. Should you accept, you will receive the mission Supra et Ultra. You can return to Tuala and talk to him to agree to join the UC Vanguard and receive the mission.

Register for the UC Vanguard

Note: Registering for the UC Vanguard requires you to not have a bounty at the time of registration! Find out how to remove your bounty if you have an ongoing one.

Your first objective is to Join the UC Vanguard. Take the elevator from the MAST building’s lobby to the Vanguard Orientation Hall. The Objective Marker will lead you to one of the registration terminals. Interact with it to view the Enlistment Agreement and select the “Agree” button to sign it.

(Optional) Explore the Orientation Hall

Note: Exploring every mural at the Orientation Hall will get you extra credits. The mission objective seems to be bugged as it did not complete for me, but Tuala mentioned that I did listen and watch every mural.

This objective is entirely optional. Exploring the Orientation Hall’s visual experiences, kiosks, mannequins, models, and statues will be a great entry to Starfield’s lore, though, from the collapse of Earth’s atmosphere, the formation of the United Colonies and all the different factions that rose after it. You will also learn about the conflicts between factions (UC vs. Freestar Collective, Va’ruun vs. everyone), such as the Serpent Crusade and the horrors of the battle of Niira.

There will also be mentions of the infamous UC Xenoweapons (bioengineered alien creatures) and the Terromoprhs’ attack in Londinion (which also seem like Xenoweapons if you pay attention to the graphics). Finally, you will learn about the history of the UC Vanguard and the perks of becoming a UC citizen.

Take the elevator past the Orientation Hall to reach the piloting simulators and start the final part of the Vanguard Exam.

Note: The Piloting Simulator is a great way to level up a bunch of combat related Tech skills, including Piloting, Targeting Control Systems, Ballistic Weapon Systems and many more. Thankfully it remains accessible after the exam.

Once you reach the large room with the two piloting simulators left and right, climb the stairs and talk to Exam Proctor Samuelson. He will brief you on the basics of the piloting simulator exam.

  • Your goal is to defeat at least three tiers of simulated enemies to complete the exam and proceed to your first probationary mission. The total number of tiers is six.
  • Defeating more than three tiers of enemies will reduce your required enlistment time for UC citizenship, and your enlistment bonus will be increased.
  • You can try as many times as possible before returning to Commander John Tuala. Only your highest score matters.
  • You will use a Deimos Hoplite in the simulation, the standard UC destroyer.

Before you head inside the Piloting Simulator, head to the room on the opposite side of Samuelson. You can loot the Vanguard Space Tactics 01 magazine from the cabinet, which gives a 5% permanent damage boost to your ship’s missiles. It will come in handy!

You can check my tips on how to beat Tier VI in the Piloting Simulator exam to beat all six tiers of the simulator. Make sure you access the Debug Tools on the simulator’s computer and hack the “Authorized Users Only” option for extra credits.

  • Completing Tier III earns you 7,000 Credits or more, depending on whether you did the things I mention in the section below.
  • Completing Tier IV earns you 8,500 Credits or more, depending on whether you did the things I mention in the section below.
  • Completing Tier V earns you 10,000 Credits.
  • Completing Tier VI will earn you 24,800 if you do everything I mention in the section below!

Once you complete the Piloting Simulator exam, head back to the lobby and talk to Commander Tuala.

If you completed the Piloting Simulator’s Tier 6, you will get a surprise reaction from Tuala. Tuala will now check the data from your exams and assess your performance in individual categories. This will affect the amount of Credits you receive at the end of the mission.

If you also explored all the murals at the Orientation Hall, accessed the Debug Tools, and hacked the Simulation Controls computer, you will receive 24,800 Credits.

Follow Commander Tuala

After Tuala asses performance in the exams based on the data. Once he is done, you must follow him outside the MAST building to take your oath and join the UC Vanguard.

Once you are outside, speak to Commander Tuala to take your oath. Once you are ready, answer “I do.” to complete Supra et Ultra and receive your rewards, 250 EXP, and your enlistment bonus, based on your performance.
