The Piloting skill is a tier 1 skill within Starfield‘s Tech skill tree and one of the most important skills in Starfield when it comes to your ship and space combat. Piloting’s Ranks 1 and 2 significantly boost your spacecraft’s handling and capabilities, while Ranks 3 and 4 allow you to fly more advanced ships with better reactors (Class B and C, respectively).

“In a universe constantly expanding, those certified to effectively pilot various spacecraft has grown dramatically.”

This skill is fundamental for any player focusing on space combat, cargo and contraband transportation, and exploring. Not only does it increase your ship’s overall capabilities, but it also unlocks more advanced classes of ships as you climb through its ranks.

Piloting Skill Perks

The Piloting skill is an essential skill that you don’t want to overlook. Here’s why:

Rank 1: Ship Thrusters

Unlocks the ability to use ship thrusters, allowing advanced maneuvering left, right, up, and down. It’s a must-have if you want to escape tight situations during combat.

Rank 2: Improved Handling

Further rank-ups offer increased turning rates and better maneuverability, essential for dodging incoming asteroid belts or enemy fire.

Rank 3 & 4: Advanced Reactors = Better Ships

As you progress to Ranks 3 and 4, you’ll unlock the ability to pilot Class B and Class C ships, respectively. Using Class B reactors allows you to install Class A or B components while using Class C reactors allows you to use Class A, B, or C components, giving you access to improved weapon systems, shielding, and additional storage compartments in the Ship Builder and Ship Upgrade menus.

How to Rank Up Piloting

To advance in the Piloting skill tree, you must complete space combat-related challenges to unlock the next and spend skill points earned by increasing your character level. Each new rank requires one skill point, which you’ll earn through completing missions, exploring, and defeating enemies. You can use the Pilot Simulator at the UC Vanguard (to get access you must start the Supra et Ultra mission) examination room to complete the Rank Up challenges fast.

Here’s how you’ll unlock each rank through challenges:

  1. Rank 1: Destroy 5 ships to unlock Rank 2
  2. Rank 2: Destroy 15 ships to unlock Rank 3
  3. Rank 3: Destroy 30 ships to unlock Rank 4
  4. Rank 4: At this point, you’ve mastered the skill
