The Devils You Know, UC Vanguard’s sixth quest, introduces a key figure to players and asks them to track down a war criminal

The Devils You Know is the sixth mission of the UC Vanguard‘s questline in Starfield, following up Friends Like These. You are in for a treat with this one, as you are about to meet a surprising stranger from the past. You will then embark on a mission to apprehend a war criminal.

  • UC Vanguard Mission 06
  • Planets: Chthonia, Etherea
  • Rewards: 150 EXP and 3,500 Credits

How to Start The Devils You Know

To start The Devils You Know, you must first complete First Like These, UC Vanguard’s fifth mission.

Proceed to Your Meeting (Subsection Seven)

Head to the MAST building’s elevator and take it to Subsection Seven. You will reach the door where A-Level clearance is required. Once it’s unsealed, you can proceed down the corridor. Pass through one more door to reach a meeting room area.

Use the Intercom

Talk to the stranger through the Intercom, and he will introduce himself pretty soon…

Speak to Vae Victis

I hope you got some goosebumps here, as we are face to face with one of the most important historical figures in Starfield’s lore, for better or worse.

Vae Victis is alive and confined at the bottom of the MAST building. He will explain that he was labeled as one of the Colony Wars great villains and was to be executed for his crimes, but he was deemed too valuable to be discarded by the previous regime. So, he was put in a cell. His execution was staged (a fake lethal injection shot).

Sanon accepted the previous Cabinet’s offer to become a consultant, trading his freedom for his life.

After earning this Cabinet’s trust, Sanon has been permitted to work alongside one of the UC’s “recovery teams.” Vae Victis uses the information collected by the team and his knowledge to help track down war criminals and set things right.

He will ask you to track down Reginald Orlase, who, like Vae Victis and Hadrian, was involved in some of UC’s more problematic lines of research, mech weapons in his case. Reginald fled after the Colony War, refusing to face a tribunal, and has since offered his services to the highest bidder.

In return, he will offer the locations of Hadrian’s old research team members.

You can speak to MacIntyre to confirm Sanon’s story.

MacIntyre will confirm Vae Victis’ story, saying that Orlase has been in the lam for years. While killing him is out of the question, bringing him to justice is a priority.

You can head back down to Sanon and accept his offer, as capturing a wanted war criminal would be great for the greater good, while it seems you don’t have to kill Orlase if you don’t want to.

Once you accept his offer, Sanon will reveal Reginald Orlase‘s location. He is somewhere around Etherea in the Wolf star system. We must speak to Captain Rayna Marquez of the local Vanguard at The Den in Chthonia‘s orbit for more information on Orlase.

The Wolf system is only 8.27 lightyears away from Alpha Centauri, so a single jump should do it to reach Chthonia. Once you get within 500 meters of The Den, dock with it and board it.

Once you board the Den and talk to Rayna, she will reveal a ship in Etherea’s orbit, the Warlock, that never hails any other ship or docks with them. Some amateur investigators have tried to approach it; at least two never returned. Until now, they thought Etherea’s debris field was to blame for the disappearances.

Find “The Warlock”

The coordinates will take you to Etherea Ruins. Once you fast-travel there, you will see The Warlock around 7,500 meters away. Approach closer, and you will engage in combat. Turn down power to your Grav. Drive and adjust power to the rest of your systems accordingly.

Destroy the Ship or Disable the Engines

You can either take out The Warlock‘s shield and then destroy its engines to dock with it and try to apprehend Reginald Orlase or blow the ship to pieces and Orlase with it. The second option is straightforward, so we’ll focus on the first one.

Destroy the Ship or Arrest the Pilot

Note: Even with Piloting Rank 4, you won’t be able to Steal the Warlock. The ship has been rendered inoperable is the message you will get, probably because Orlase initiated a file deletion command before biting the dust.

Once you board The Warlock, you can still walk out and destroy the ship. Orlase will commit suicide soon after you enter, so there you have it. Loot his body for some Credits, his UC Science Division ID: Orlase, Reginald, his lab coat, weapon, and ammo.

Ensure that you Loot the Cargo Hold and the Captain’s Locker. Take the stairs to the ship’s bottom level to find a Helmet Display (Expert Security Level), a Safe (Master Security Level), and a locked Locker (Master Security Level), among other loot all around the ship.

Unfortunately, you cannot steal the Warlock, and I don’t think you can get back to it even if you don’t destroy it. If you don’t have Security Rank 4, you may have to kiss the two Master Security Level locks goodbye; I’m afraid (just like me, as I wasted some skills points and remained at Rank 3. Note to self: don’t write guides without maximizing Lockpicking ASAP).

You will also find some Harvested Organs with really high value (around 1,200 Credits), but they are Contraband. Make sure to store them in your ship’s Cargo Hold with Shielded Cargo or sell them before you return to New Atlantis.

Return the Evidence to Vae Victis

Return to your ship and undock. Head back to the MAST District and take the elevator to Subsection Seven to return to Vae Victis. After your conversation, he will ask for proof that Orlase is dead.

Transfer the ID to Vae Victis through the Transfer System. Then, speak to him again.

Vae Victis will guarantee the return of old Red Dogs team members to the team, except for one. Kaiser, a Robot Model A, from Niira. You must retrieve that one in the next mission, War Relics. The Devils You Know is now completed. You will receive 150 EXP and 3,500 Credits as a reward.
