Breaking the Bank Walkthrough: Crimson Fleet 04

Anastasios Antoniadis

Breaking the Bank, Starfield’s fourth Crimson Fleet mission, will take you on board The Siren of the Stars before you enter the GalBank Archives in New Atlantis.

Breaking the Bank is the fourth faction mission for Starfield‘s Crimson Fleet and the follow-up to Echoes of the Past, where you entered The Lock on Suvorov searching for clues related to Kryx’s Legacy, Jasper Kryx’s hidden treasure. After finding out about the Legacy GalBank’s ship that went down during the Colony War, it’s time to find more information about the ship and its treasure (which Jasper Kryx never discovered). You must find Larry Dumbvrosky, a GalBank VIP executive on the Trident Luxury Lines’s cruiser, “The Siren of the Stars,” and acquire his Galbank credentials.

Additionally, Naeva Mora wants you to steal the Earth Savior Award, which is to be presented at the Terran Preservation Society gala that happens to take place aboard The Siren of the Stars. While the latter is an entirely optional objective, it is the only way to get some Credit for this mission.

Once you receive Dumbrovsky’s GalBank Credentials, you must enter GalBank’s archives in New Atlantis to discover what happened to the Legacy.

Your first objective in Breaking the Bank will be to travel to the Siren of the Stars. The ship can be found in Arane IV‘s orbit in the Aranae system. You can jump there using your Missions log and the “Set Course” option for the objective.

Once you get within 500 meters of the Siren of the Stars, dock with it and board it.

Speak with Evgeny Rokov

Note: If you plan on stealing the ES Award and giving it to Naeva, don’t tell Rokov anything about Naeva’s plan. Revealing her plan will result in less Credits as a reward from Naeva.

Upon entering the ship, your objective will change to “Speak with Evgeny Rokov,” the Siren’s captain and a former member of the Crimson Fleet. You can loot some Digipicks, a Heart+, and a Storage Box on your way to Rokov. Rokov will be surprised he received Delgado’s orders just when he was ready to have his own big score with Naeva. Rokov aims to return to the Crimson Fleet, so he still follows Delgado’s orders. Worst case scenario, he makes a ton of Credits from his business with Naeva.

Rokov is aware that you are searching for Dumbrovsky and wonders whether you are just here for him or to steal something too (the Earth Savior award). You can either tell Rokov you are here to steal the Earth Savior Award too or keep the information to yourself. If you tell him, Rokov will realize Naeva is trying to cut him off the deal.

Rokov then will ask you why you are targeting Dumbrovsky as a GalBank executive is just normal prey. I chose not to share any details of the mission with him. Eventually, it will be easy to convince Rokov to help (I don’t think your choices matter anyway). He will also mention that due to the “Terran Preservation Society” charity gala, Larry Dumbrovksy will want to show off his VIP clout on the ship.

Finally, Rokov recommends that you talk to some of Dumbrovsky’s fellow philanthropists at the gala to dig up some dirt for the executive. He will also give you the Starview Access Pass card to access the Starview Ballroom and recommend that you don’t kill anyone on the ship, as the acoustic threat detector will alert security, and all hell will break loose.

You must now look for Sheila Holbrooke in the Starview Ballroom about the ES Award. In my case, Sheila has an objective marker because I revealed Naeva’s plan to Rokov, who told me that Sheila Holbrook is in charge of the ES Award. You should find Sheila and discover that information for yourself.

Ask Society Patrons about Larry Dumbrovsky

You are now free to roam the Sirens of the Stars. Take the stairs to the left and head up until you reach a large area with plenty of crew members. Head almost straight ahead to the door next to the red vending machine on the left side of the room. Open the door to reach Captain Evgeny Rokov’s cabin.

You can have a look at Captain Rokov’s Computer (Novice Security Level) to your right as you enter the cabin. Head inside the bedroom.

Burden of Proof: Request Denied (Evidence)

The Request Denied (Evidence) Data Slate is on the left side of the double bed and a Safe with a Master Security Level lock.

Let’s move on and find Sheila to get the optional objective out of the way. Follow the objective marker to reach the door to Sarview Ballroom.

Talking to Sheila will reveal that the ES Award is inside the Purser’s Safe. Take the door to the Guest Suites to find a way to access the Purser’s Safe.

Head to the objective location to find Chief Purser Murata. She will tell you that the ES Award can only be accessed by presenting an appropriate Claim ID to open the Purser’s Safe.

(Optional) Acquire the ES Award Claim ID

Head back to the Starview Ballroom to find a way to acquire the ES Award Claim ID. The obvious candidate to be the holder of the Claim ID is, of course, Sheila herself. You will have the option to Persuade her to give you the Claim ID, and you should use it, as according to Murata, the Purser’s Safe will be sealed permanently in case of emergency.

(Optional) Steal the ES Award

Return to the Purser’s Safe, use the Safe Room Computer on the left side of the door to unlock it, and loot the Earth Savior Award and 1,583 Credits. You can also loot the Weapon Case and the First Aid Kit inside the safe, without Murata seeing you.

Here are your options with the ES Award now that you have it:

  • Give it to Naeva. You will get various amounts of Credits depending on whether you told Evgeny Rokov about your orders to steal the award. You will get between 3,000 and 6,000 Credits depending on your actions.
  • Keep the ES Award and sell it at the Trading Authority to get 9000 Credits or more. It depends on the player’s Commercial Skill level.

While option #3 is the most ludicrous, it’s worth noting that Naeva is the one person in the Crimson Fleet we should keep close to, and she looks the most sharp one. I chose option #1 instead of keeping the award for myself.

Ask Society Patrons about Larry Dumbrovsky

Talk to the patrons inside the Starview Ballroom, and you will find out that Larry probably framed someone with fake loan scam accusations to take their spot as VIP executive. He also seems to be cheating on his wife, whom he leaves in New Atlantis when he goes on “business trips.” One patron will tell you that Dumbrovsky has screwed over so many people that his disappearing of the face of the… space would make many people happy.

Eventually, one patron will tell you that Larry Dumbrovsky spends much “quality time” with Klaudia Swist, and his wife doesn’t know anything about it. That’s the person we are going to look for now.

Speak to Klaudia Swist

You must head again to the Guest Suites to search for Klaudia Swist, as she is not in the Ballroom. You can bribe her (2,500 Credits) or persuade her to give you dirt on Dumbrovsky. Klaudia Swist, Gabriel Verra, and Larry Dumbrovsky were running a scheme for months and scamming GalBank (although, in the end, Larry was scamming everyone else too).

Gabriel Vera was the mole in UCSec who would warn them if the plan started to go south. Swist wrote an algorithm that creates a randomized number of false “ghost credits” that mimic the crypto-key of actual credits. The algorithm then passes the ghost credits to legit GalBank transactions, and the genuine credits enter a dummy account. Eventually, the crypto-keys of the original credits are also altered to get them clean of any suspicion and tracking. This way, all transactions look right, even though the original receiver gets “ghosted” dummy credits.

Dumbrovsky was required to be part of the plan as his top-level clearance allowed him to manipulate the data and ensure that Swist’s crypto-manipulations did not turn up on any of the bank’s audits.

Speak to Gabriel Vera

After Swist’s revelations, the guy to talk to is Gabriel Vera, back inside the Starview Boardroom. Gabriel won’t be intimidated that easily, though, and after some threats to make you disappear from the Settled Systems and ensure that you didn’t ever exist, the conversation ends. Time for Rokov’s help.

Return to Evgeny Rokov

Head to the top level of the Ballroom to find Captain Rokov. You will agree that it’s best to ring a ship-wide emergency to have all passengers report back to their cabins for lockdown. This way, you can talk to Vera alone and make him reveal his participation in the scheme. Without hard evidence, it’s hard to pressure him anyway. Take the stairs down and reach the Engineering Deck door. Your target will be the ship’s life support systems. You will tamper with them to cause a ship-wide lockdown.

Speak to Chief Engineer Sandin

Find Chief Engineer Sandin and either bribe him with 1,000 Credits, use the Empath option, or tell him that Rokov is willing to erase his gambling debt to gain access to the Life Support System.

Press the three Reset Switches to disable the Life Support System. Now, you can head to Gabriel Vera’s cabin to confront him.

Confront Gabriel Vera in his Cabin

Head to Gabriel Vera’s cabin by getting back to the Ballroom. Before you leave the Engineering Deck, you can unlock the Novice Level door to your left as you leave Chief Sandin’s office. There is a Contraband Chest with Mech Parts and Sentient AI Parts that you might want to get your hands on.

Once you find Gabriel Vera, you must either bribe him or attack and kill him to get access to his incriminating evidence about Larry Dumbrovsky. Sadly, there seems to be no other option, and bribing him with 2,500 Credits is recommended here.

Burden of Proof: GalBank Plan (Evidence)

Whatever you decide, you will receive Gabriel Vera’s Transaction Log and another piece of evidence for Lt. Toft and Burden of Proof: the GalBank Plan (Evidence) Data Slate.

Confront Larry Dumbrovsky

You now have enough evidence to confront Larry Dumbrovsky in his cabin. Agreeing to give you his credentials will be very easy, as Larry has already figured out what you want.

(Optional) Kill Larry Dumbrovsky

You also have the option to attack and kill Larry Dumbrovsky and then loot his credentials.

Loot Cedstiks from Dumbrovsky's Cabin - Breaking the Bank

Regardless of what you decide to do here, remember to loot Dumbrovsky’s office and bed for Credstiks, while you can also steal his suits.

Should You Spare or Kill Larry Dumbrovsky

Killing Larry Dumbrovsky will result in much loot and bloodshed as you leave the Sirent of the Stars. Your companions will be angered, and Commander Ikande will be furious about your action. Sparing Larry keeps everyone happy, and you still get the GalBank credentials. So it comes down to whether you want some more action and loot (and a lot of anger) or just to end this mission.

Leaving the ship on normal difficulty after you Kill Dumbrovsky is a cakewalk despite all the enemies, so you won’t have to worry about that. You may be in for a wild ride on Very Hard in your first playthrough.

Return to Evgeny Rokov

Return to Evgeny Rokov - Breaking the Bank

Meet Evgeny downstairs for some closing remarks between the two of you. During the dialogue, you can thank him for his help, and when he thanks you at the end, you can ask for Credits. While Rokov doesn’t have any for you, finding him at the Key after this mission will be a good idea.

Proceed to New Atlantis

Before you head to New Atlantis, sell any Contraband you may have looted or move them to your Shielded Cargo Hold, as you must pass a Contraband Scan before you land. Once you land at the Spaceport, head to the NAT station and take the tram to the Commercial District.

Enter the Galbank Archives

Once you reach the Commercial District, head to GalBank and take the elevator in the lobby to the archives.

Deal with the Galbank Guard

Talk to the guard and pass him Dumbrovsky’s credentials to access the Archives. If your character has the Bounty Hunter Background, you will sense that something is wrong with the guard’s answers. Ecliptic Mercenaries have made it into the Archives and are waiting for you.

Enter the Archives

Enter the Archives and get ready to face the Ecliptic Ambushers.

Around 5 Ecliptics will be waiting for you inside the Archives. The most challenging one is a Level 30 Ecliptic Operator. Use the right and left paths to flank the Ecliptics before they flank you.

Recover Information Regarding GalBank’s Lost Transport

After exterminating the Ecliptic threat, head to the first floor of the Archives room to find the GalBank Archives computer. Access the Lost Ships Register directory to find information about the Legacy. The Legacy’s last known position was around planet Bannoc IV in the Bannoc system. The amount of credits the Legacy carried is classified, but you also find out that it has a CBR27 transponder type.

Proceed to The Key

Fast-travel back to the Key, dock with it, and board it. Then, head straight to the Operation Rooms center to find Delgado.

Speak to Delgado

Speak to Delgado - Breaking the Bank
Image Credit: Bethesda via Meta Game Guides

Once you pass the information you recovered to Delgado, Naeva will say that Bannoc IV is an EM-Class Gas Giant. You won’t be able to get close to the planet without frying your ship’s systems. Jasper Kryx probably hit the same roadblock in his efforts to reach the Legacy’s treasure.

Delgado will recommend tracking the CBR27 Transponder of the ship to pinpoint the exact location of the shipwreck. However, as Naeva explains, this type of Transponder is military-grade with ultrabit encryption and constantly reshuffles frequencies.

However, Naeva has a potential solution in her mind. The UC seems to be working on a ship signal decryption system called the “ComSpike.” If the ComSpike exists, it will help you track down anything.

So here are your next orders. Work with Naeva to get your hands on the ComSpike.

Follow Naeva

After the conversation, follow Naeva as there is the matter of the ES Award at hand. Once you reach an isolated room, speak to her.

Speak to Naeva

Naeva will ask you about the ES Award.

(Optional) Give the ES Award to Naeva

Speak to Naeva - Breaking the Bank

You can lie and say you didn’t find her or pass Naeva the ES Award. If you didn’t mention your mission to steal the award to Rokov, you will get 6,000 Credits. If you exposed Naeva’s plan earlier, you will lose some of those Credits.

I received 150 EXP and 3,000 Credits as I revealed Naeva’s plan to Rokov.

Report Mission Progress on the UC Vigilance

Report back to Commander Ikande and Lieutenant Toft at the Vigilance.

The Commander will be happy if there are no casualties during your mission. Regardless, you will be told to continue assisting the Crimson Fleet with the Legacy’s pursuit and the next target, the ComSpike. This concludes the Breaking the Bank mission, unlocking the “The Best There Is.” You will receive 350 EXP for completing Breaking the Bank.
