Should You Kill or Persuade Delgado in Legacy's End

Choosing to side with UC SysDef in Starfield brings players to a pivotal decision in the Crimson Fleet questline. As part of SysDef’s mission, players are tasked with penetrating the ranks of the Crimson Fleet. They aim to gather intelligence on the pirates’ operations and ambitions, relaying this information to UC’s defense force focusing on eradicating the Crimson Fleet (Burden of Proof quest). This infiltration mission plays a key role in the broader narrative of the game.

The player faces a critical choice regarding Delgado, the pirate leader and captain of the Crimson Fleet. Delgado, the main liaison between the player and the pirate legion since their association, stands at the heart of this decision. The player must decide whether to eliminate or negotiate with him. This storyline is closely connected to the United Colonies faction quest.

However, there’s a twist in the narrative. Pursuing “Kryx’s Legacy,” a valuable treasure from the faction’s originator, Jasper Kryx, becomes central to the Crimson Fleet’s agenda. When the player eventually uncovers this treasure inside Legacy, a GalBank ship, a critical decision awaits in the mission titled “Legacy’s End.” The player must choose their allegiance – support SysDef or the Crimson Fleet.

This decision involves delivering the discovered data to Delgado of the Crimson Fleet or UC Commander Ikande. This choice leads to a consequential action: assaulting and annihilating the opposing faction’s base, effectively eliminating them from the game’s landscape.

In this climactic confrontation, the player directly encounters the leader of the targeted faction. In a desperate move, this leader threatens to trigger their base’s self-destruction. The player is then faced with a dilemma: negotiating a peaceful resolution or resorting to lethal force. If you are reading this you have probably sided with UC SysDef and are about to confront Delgado at The Key.

Opting to align with Ikande and SysDef in Starfield leads the player character to an ultimate showdown with Delgado. Players choose to eliminate Delgado or convince him to give up in this decisive encounter. The “Legacy’s End” mission might escalate into a battle with Delgado if the player opts for aggressive dialogue or fails to negotiate his surrender.

Delgado presents a formidable challenge with robust armor and the distinctive Tempest rifle, yet he isn’t the toughest adversary in the game. Delgado is essentially a highly-skilled, yet standard, human opponent, lacking the extraordinary Starborn abilities of the player character or the game’s final antagonist. In this crucial fight, players are advised to utilize all available resources—weapons, explosives, and Starborn powers—to overpower Delgado, as this decision is irreversible swiftly.

After defeating Delgado, players should search his inventory for valuable items. Notably, defeating him is the only way to acquire his computer password, which is essential for liberating The Key’s Reckoner, Shinya Voss. Delgado’s unique Tempest rifle is noteworthy for its high damage and fire rate combination. The rifle’s Handloading feature adds extra damage but introduces the chance of random round failures, making it a risky yet potentially rewarding weapon. Players can also loot Delgado’s Outfit from the leader’s body.

Before reaching Delgado, players must contend with a final onslaught of pirates guarding three reactors. These adversaries are less challenging compared to Delgado. Players can proceed to Delgado’s office upon defeating them to conclude the quest. Here, they can kill Delgado and stop the base’s self-destruct sequence.

What Happens If You Persuade Delgado to Surrender

In Starfield, successfully navigating Persuasion checks often provides a strategic advantage, especially in key encounters like the showdown with Delgado. During the dialogue, players may encounter options labeled “[Persuade],” initiating a Persuasion mini-game. This game displays a Persuasion bar at the bottom of the screen, segmented to indicate the difficulty level of persuading the NPC. A “Turns” counter also appears, indicating the number of dialogue choices available before the NPC loses patience.

Failure in Persuasion attempts has its costs. It wastes a turn, and a failed attempt might also reduce the Persuasion bar’s segments, setting back the player’s progress.

Each Persuasion choice is accompanied by a number indicating its potential impact on the bar and a colored indicator of its success probability: green (high success rate, low impact), orange (moderate success rate and impact), and red (low success rate, high impact). Players must weigh the risks and rewards, typically starting with safer green options and moving to higher-risk choices as needed.

Confronting Delgado, players have three turns to fill eight segments of the Persuasion bar, a challenging but feasible task in late-game Starfield. Relying solely on green options is unlikely to suffice, necessitating some risk-taking. The Manipulation skill, acquired through leveling up or aligning with Ryujin Industries, introduces additional green options, each contributing significantly to the Persuasion bar, making Delgado’s challenge more approachable.

If persuasion fails, Delgado becomes hostile, and the mission proceeds as if the player had chosen to attack. However, a successful Persuasion ends the quest instantly, with Delgado deactivating the self-destruct and surrendering alongside the Crimson Fleet to SysDef. They can later be found in the brig of the UC flagship, Vigilance. Opting for persuasion means forgoing Delgado’s unique items, including the Tempest rifle. The narrative outcome mirrors that of eliminating Delgado; completing the UC quest line suggests the immediate disbanding of the Crimson Fleet.

Killing Delgado is the Best Option

Eliminating Delgado in Starfield’s “Legacy’s End” quest, particularly when siding with SysDef, emerges as the more advantageous choice. Allowing Delgado to live results in his indefinite incarceration in a UC cell, a fate far removed from the adventurous life he envisioned. While players can visit him in jail, this interaction doesn’t offer significant gameplay benefits.

Choosing not to persuade Delgado opens the opportunity to acquire his valuable equipment, including the Advanced Pirate Corsair Spacesuit, the Pirate Raiding Balanced Pack, Delgado’s Outfit, and his exclusive rifle, Tempest. While most items in Delgado’s inventory are available elsewhere, Tempest is an exception, obtainable only through defeating him or using console command cheats.

Opting for Delgado’s surrender yields little beyond the gratification of mastering a Persuasive check and perhaps contributing to the Persuasion skill rank challenge. Conversely, terminating him provides practical rewards, including the unique and irreplaceable Tempest. In subsequent playthroughs, players can explore alternate pathways, such as siding with Delgado, which leads to a comparable scenario with SysDef’s Commander Ikande. Eliminating Ikande rewards players with his unique pistol, Unfair Advantage. Starfield’s intricate design and comprehensive New Game Plus mode enable players to investigate all facets of these intricate decisions thoroughly.
