Targeting Control Systems Skill

The Targeting Control Systems skill in Starfield is undoubtedly one of the most valuable skills in space combat. Firstly, without it, you can’t target a ship’s specific modules, so you can’t board and steal enemy ships. Your only option is to destroy them. On the other hand, Targeting Control Systems allow you to lock onto a ship and, for instance, disable its weapons (optional) and engine (mandatory) to dock with it and board it. This will also allow you to exterminate the crew and steal the enemy ship, as long it’s stealable.

As you understand, this is gameplay-altering stuff, and it can alter your approach to several Starfield missions, e.g., The Devils You Know.

Moreover, as you climb up TCS’ ranks, not only does the time required to lock onto enemy ships plummetdropping a staggering 60% by rank 4but your ship’s offense and defense are enhanced as well, only against the target-locked ship. You’ll see an increased chance of landing critical hits and causing more system damage. Meanwhile, when an enemy ship is target-locked, it fires at you slower, giving you a defensive advantage. This can prove valuable in challenging situations where you encounter a much stronger ship or multiple ships, e.g., during Tiers V and VI in the Piloting Simulator.
