House Va’Ruun is one of the three most powerful dominions in Starfield’s Settled Systems.

House Va'Ruun Starfield

House Va’ruun is the third interstellar (along with The Freestar Collective and United Colonies) government established within Starfield’s Settled Systems, distinguishing itself with a unique theocratic structure. At the heart of this government is a deeply entrenched devotion to a deity revered as the Great Serpent.

The full scope of House Va’ruun’s dominion remains shrouded in mystery, with the exact breadth of its territory yet to be fully charted or understood. The capital, Dazra, is situated on the planet Va’ruun’kai, which lies nestled within an enigmatic star system, further adding to the intrigue and mystique of this theocratic power.

As of 2330, much of House Va’ruun’s internal workings remain mysterious, with only a few details about its governance structure emerging into the public sphere. At the helm of this enigmatic government is the Va’ruun High Council, an authoritative body that oversees its administration.

The council is presided over by Anasko Va’ruun, who stands as the current leader, guiding the strategic and ideological course of House Va’ruun. This sparse information only adds to this theocratic entity’s intrigue, leaving many details of its inner mechanisms a subject of speculation and interest in the wider galaxy.

House Va’Ruun History

The origins of House Va’ruun, now a formidable theocratic entity within the Settled Systems, trace back to a fateful voyage in 2190. Its genesis lies with the passengers of a colony ship that embarked from New Atlantis, only to be declared lost. During an enigmatic grav jump, a passenger named Jinan Va’ruun underwent a profound and transformative experience. He reported a lost time during which he allegedly communed with a celestial entity calling itself the Great Serpent.

The Great Serpent, claimed to be the creator of the Milky Way System, has entered a long hibernation to rejuvenate its strength. Upon awakening, it prophesied a cataclysmic event, the “Shrouding,” where it would reclaim its creation, sparing only its devout followers. Jinan, convinced by this vision, dedicated himself to spreading the teachings of the Great Serpent and amassing followers in preparation for this impending apocalypse.

In 2230, the descendants of this enigmatic colony ship emerged, revealing themselves as House Va’ruun. Founded and led by Jinan, this theocracy made its presence known aboard the Mourning, which served as their flagship until its decommission in 2299. Initially, House Va’ruun sought diplomatic relations, proclaiming their desire to share the Great Serpent’s message. However, in 2240, under Jinan’s direction, they launched the Serpent’s Crusade, a relentless war against human civilization. This conflict ceased in 2263 with Jinan’s death, leading to his son Jarek Va’ruun’s succession and subsequent peace overtures. Despite efforts to rehabilitate its image, including establishing an embassy in New Atlantis, House Va’ruun struggled to shake off its notorious reputation. Following the Colony War, it became the third faction to sign the Armistice, only to retreat into isolation later.

By 2330, a radical faction known as the Va’ruun Zealots continued to sow chaos in the Settled Systems. As per the insights of Andreja, these Zealots have distorted the original Va’ruun doctrines, viewing all non-followers as heretics needing purification before the Great Serpent’s apocalyptic return. Reports of their presence in regions like Decaran, Moloch, Ophion, and Zosma have unsettled many.

The precise location of Va’ruun’kai, the heartland and capital of House Va’ruun, remains shrouded in secrecy. In a demonstration of their clandestine nature, even House Va’ruun’s own agents are kept in the dark about the coordinates of Va’ruun’kai. These agents are deployed on intelligence and resource acquisition missions against the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective, often operating under extreme conditions with minimal support. Their return to Va’ruun’kai is contingent upon the successful completion of their assignments, as determined by their superiors, who then dispatch a retrieval ship.
