If you want to sell a ship that you have legally acquired in Starfield, the process is quite simple. You can sell it at various spaceports featuring a ship services technician or at your outpost shipbuilder kiosk. However, remember that you can’t sell your last remaining ship; you always need a “home ship.”
To make your life easier, ship services technicians can be found at key locations throughout the galaxy:
- New Atlantis, Jemison (Alpha Centauri System)
- Gagarin on Gagarin (Alpha Centauri System)
- Cydonia on Mars (Sol System)
- Red Devils’ HQ on Mars (Sol System)
- Note: Becomes available after “The Devils You Know”
- Neon on Volii Alpha (Volii System)
- New Homestead on Titan (Sol System)
- Akila City on Akila (Cheyenne System)
- Hopetown on Polvo (Valo System)
- Paradiso on Porrima II (Porrima System)
- Red Mile on Porrima III (Porrima System)
- Eleos Retreat on Ixyl II (Ixyl System)
- The Key in Suvorov’s Orbit (Kryx System)
- The Den in Chthonia’s Orbit (Wolf System)
To sell your ship, talk to the ship services technician at one of these locations. Talk to the Ship Services Technician and follow the steps below:
- Select the “Let me see what ships you have for sale.” dialogue option.
- You will now see the vendor’s ship selection. However, you will also see a “SELL” option at the bottom right of your screen.
- Press the “SELL” option (or “R” on PC) to view your own fleet.
- Switch between ships and select the one you want to sell. Make sure it’s not your home ship. Otherwise, you won’t be able to sell it. Also, make sure you have looted everything from the ship’s Cargo Hold and Captain’s Locker (I have not tried to sell a ship with Contraband or Stolen goods inside, so I’m not sure if you can do it).
- Press the “Confirm” option (or “E” on PC) on the pop-up menu to confirm your ship’s sale.
What If I Want to Sell My Home Ship?
If you want to sell your “Home Ship,” you must first select another ship as your “Home Ship.” This will transfer all crew and cargo to the new “Home Ship” (you may end up with some mass issues if your new “Home Ship”‘s cargo hold is too small), allowing you to sell your previous “Home Ship.”
How to Sell Stolen (Commandeered) Ships
Once you have stolen a ship, make sure you loot everything, especially contraband inside it, and head to a planet without UC or Freestar Collective Scans to sell the contraband. Note: The scans can only identify contraband on your ship, not stolen items. They can’t even identify a stolen ship. 🙂
At this point the stolen ship will have become your “Home” Ship,” so make sure to change your “Home Ship” first.
Now, head to a Ship Services Technician, select the “I’d like to view and modify my ships” option, and register the stolen ship. Once you have registered a commandeered ship, you can sell it. However, remember that registering the ship costs around 90% of the ship’s initial value, so the profit margin is quite small.
