Grand Theft Auto V has been a mainstay in the gaming world since its release, captivating players with its expansive open world and compelling storytelling. However, a recent leak revealing the cancellation of eight planned single-player DLCs for the game has sparked a significant backlash among its fanbase, with some even threatening to boycott the franchise.
The leaked information came to light when a segment of GTA V’s source code was released online, inadvertently exposing details about previously planned expansions, including titles like SP Assassination Pack, SP Manhunt Pack, SP Norman Pack, Agent Trevor, Relationship Pack, Enterprise Pack, Prologue DLC, and LibertyV DLC. This leak was first reported by Insider Gaming and quickly caught the attention of the gaming community.
The news has been particularly disheartening for players who fondly remember the quality of previous GTA single-player DLCs, such as GTA IV’s acclaimed “The Ballad of Gay Tony.” Many fans have expressed frustration over Rockstar Games’ shift in focus towards GTA Online, which, despite its success, has arguably come at the expense of additional single-player content for GTA V.
The fan reaction on social media has been intense. One Twitter user, a1yNe_, commented, “Rockstar Games will suffer for this,” reflecting a sentiment echoed by many others in the community. Another user, 0xJacket, criticized the company’s strategy, saying, “Liberty V as the last single-player DLC and I’m seeing videos of some Online DLC with characters from IV. All of this was scrapped to shove the ideas in the stupid ass Online cause they sell a bazillion Shark Cards. I’m deff not touching VI [because] of this s**t.”
As GTA V’s era draws to a close with the upcoming launch of GTA VI, these revelations have led to speculations and concerns about the future direction of the franchise. Fans are particularly worried that the new installment might continue the trend of favoring online expansions over single-player content.
With the gaming community still reacting to these developments, it remains to be seen how Rockstar Games will address the backlash. The hope among many players is that GTA VI will not only meet the high expectations set by its predecessors but also revive the cherished tradition of substantial single-player DLCs that add depth and breadth to the narrative experience of the game.
