Despite being released over two decades ago, “The Simpsons: Hit & Run” continues to hold a special place in the hearts of gamers. This 2003 action-adventure game, developed by Radical Entertainment, is based on the beloved animated sitcom “The Simpsons” and captures the show’s humor through a mission-based driving and platformer experience in the fictional town of Springfield.
While there has been no official announcement of a remake, a dedicated fan and YouTuber, reubs, has taken it upon himself to reimagine what “Hit & Run” could look like using modern technology. Utilizing Unreal Engine 5, reubs has embarked on a personal project to bring this nostalgic game into the modern gaming era, complete with improved mechanics and stunning visuals.
In a series of videos uploaded to his YouTube channel, reubs showcases significant enhancements to the game. These improvements include better vehicle gameplay, an open-world format, and revamped missions, which collectively breathe new life into the Springfield universe. The graphics have been upgraded to be “10x better,” featuring an advanced AI traffic system and even virtual reality integration. Despite the impressive scope of this remake, reubs has emphasized that this endeavor is purely a passion project and, unfortunately, will not be available for public download.
The fan-made remake has not only excited longtime fans of the game but has also caught the attention of former developers from Radical Entertainment, the original creators of “Hit & Run.” One former intern and environment artist from the studio commented on the project, expressing delight and nostalgia: “Cool! This was the first game I ever worked on as an intern and Environment Artist at Radical Games back in 2002-03. Nice to see people still appreciate the work we did. Good luck!”
Although the prospect of playing this fan-made version of “The Simpsons: Hit & Run” remains elusive, the project serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of the game and the impact it had on a generation of players. It also highlights the vibrant community of developers and enthusiasts who continue to celebrate and reimagine classic video games for new audiences using cutting-edge technology.
